Task Assessment Grid

Written by James Carlson

The Task Assessment Grid shows every learner and every target for a task on one screen. Teachers can assess individual cells, bulk-assess a whole column at once, or assess all targets for one learner in a single action.

Use this for:

  1. Exit tickets - assess all students in one step, then make variations

  2. Keyboard work - move through the grid with the keyboard

  3. Capturing observational learning

How it works:

Open the Assessment Grid

  1. Open a task.

  2. Select the Evidence tab.

  3. Select the Assessment inner tab.

Understand the Grid Layout

The grid has four parts.

Corner — The top-left cell holds the select-all checkbox, the learner sort control, and the target-tree toggle.

Column headers — Each column header shows a target’s short code and name. Columns group under target-set and target-group header rows.

Row headers — The left column shows each learner’s name and current task status.

Cells — Each cell shows the assessed level for that learner and target. The cell color matches the level in the scale. An empty cell means the assessment has not been recorded.

Sort Learners

Click Learners ▲ in the corner to sort the roster A to Z. Click it again to sort Z to A.

Assess a Single Cell

  1. Click a cell in the grid.

  2. The scale popup opens. It shows all levels and the criteria for each level.

  3. Click a level. The cell updates immediately.

To clear an assessment, click again on the assessed level.

Single-cell edits do not require confirmation.

Assess a Whole Column (Bulk by Target)

Click a column header to assess all learners on that target at once.

  1. Click a column header. The scale popup opens in edit mode.

  2. Click a level.

  3. The confirmation dialog shows the target name, the level, and the learner count.

  4. Click Apply. All cells in the column update at once.

To cancel, click Cancel or press Escape. Nothing changes.

After you apply, the Undo button activates so you can reverse the action.

Assess All Targets for One Learner (Bulk by Learner)

Hover over a learner’s name in the row header to open the row bulk popup.

If the task uses one scale:

  1. Hover the learner’s name. The popup opens.

  2. Click a level.

  3. The confirmation dialog appears.

  4. Click Apply.

If the task uses more than one scale:

The popup shows one section for each scale. Each section has its own level columns and criteria text.

  1. Hover the learner’s name. The popup opens.

  2. Click a level in the first scale section.

  3. Click a level in each remaining scale section.

  4. The confirmation dialog appears automatically once every scale has a selection.

  5. Click Apply.

Read the Criteria Without Assessing

Hover over a column header without clicking. The criteria panel opens in read-only mode. It shows the level names and criteria for that target. No assessment changes.

Use the Keyboard

All grid actions are available from the keyboard.

Arrow-key navigation skips finalized rows. You cannot overwrite a finalized learner’s cells by accident.

Mouse hover popups stay hidden while you are using the keyboard, so the screen does not change under your cursor.

Select Learners and Act in Bulk

  1. Tick the checkbox at the left of each learner’s row.

  2. The corner control changes to show the count of selected learners.

  3. Click the count to open the batch action menu.

  4. Select Set Status and choose a status, or select Send reminder.

A notification appears after the action completes and reports what changed.

To select all visible learners at once, tick the checkbox in the corner.

To clear the selection, click the × next to the count in the corner.

Change One Learner’s Status

Click the status indicator in a learner’s row header. A menu opens with all available task statuses. Select the new status. The row updates immediately.

Add an Advisor Reflection and Finalize

When you set a learner’s status to Complete, the Advisor Reflection panel opens. Add any notes in the text area.

To lock the learner’s row, click Finalize Assessment.

After you finalize:

  • The cells in that row are read-only.

  • A banner marks the row as finalized.

  • Arrow-key navigation skips the row.

Undo and Redo

Click Undo in the Assessment inner nav to reverse the last change. Click Redo to reapply it.

Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+Z to undo, Ctrl+Y to redo.

Undo and redo work for individual cell edits, column bulk actions, and row bulk actions.
